Porta33 is a contemporary art production project. It invites the artists to make unpublished exhibitions and, whenever possible, based on their experiences in Madeira. It is also a dissemination project. It organizes seminars on artists' work, promotes guided tours of exhibitions in collaboration with the school community and maintains a documentation center for contemporary culture.
Since 2000, Porta33 has been developing a residency program. This program aims to make a connection between the artists invited to live in Madeira for a period of time, and the local socio-cultural and landscape determinants, giving a specific place to the work produced. The program has had a second aspect: the invitation to curators, looking for a similar result.
Between 2007 and 2009, corresponding to the proposal of the Madeira Corporate Services Collection (and following its first exhibition held in 2005 at Porta 33), a significant portion of the works of its estate were deposited here. This proposal was the natural continuation of the work in this field, already developed by Porta33 since 1990, where there has always been a place to present recent design developments.
Being a non-profit institution, Porta33 maintains a side activity as an art gallery, an option that stimulates contemporary art collection with quality parameters. This commercial activity contributed to finance some of the institution's fixed costs.
In 2009, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary celebration, Porta33 established an annual Scholarship for a young artist born and resident in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Funded by the proceeds of the activity, the scholarship works as a complement to official education and aims to integrate the scholarship holder in the artistic milieu.
In October 2009, Porta33 was approved to apply for the MAR-Madeira Artists in Residence project as part of the Program for Enhancing the Economic Potential and Territorial Cohesion of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (INTERVIR +). The MAR-Madeira Artists in Residence project aims to enhance the accumulated experience and make the institution's vocation to provide services in the area of study and the encouragement of artistic creation.
